Frequently Asked Questions
I’m new to rope. Where should I start?
You’ve come to the right place! Studio Friction offers a variety of different social and educational opportunities for all levels of rope bondage. Come to a rope lab (Open Lab, Rope 101, Saturday Rope/Potluck, TNG Night, FabLab) to check out the space and meet others. For a quick primer in tying, consider our Rope 101, generally offered the first Saturday of every month and perfect for those who are brand new to rope, or Beginner 1, the first of our four-week Rope Bondage Curriculum classes. This curriculum has been carefully crafted with the input of many of the most knowledgeable people in the Denver rope scene. We also periodically hold one day beginner intensives. To find a class that works for your schedule, check our Events page. Our beginner classes are usually scheduled a month in advance and the registration tends to fill up quickly, so don’t wait!
Can I come to an event without a partner?
Yes! Rope labs (Open Lab, Saturday Rope/Potluck, TNG Night, FabLab, etc.) and parties are observer and solo-friendly, and there are almost always other people hanging out. In fact, coming to these types of events is a great way to meet others in the rope scene and find potential partners.
For classes, first check the description to see if the class requires a tying partner. Some classes may also allow people to audit the class without a partner. If you need to find a partner for a class, we have a Studio Friction group on Fetlife and a partner-finder channel on our discord server.
How do I find a partner? Top? Bottom? Etc.?
Come to a rope lab or party! There are almost always other people hanging out, chatting and watching on the comfy couches. The Studio Friction group on Fetlife is also a good place to look if you’re trying to find someone interested in tying with you.
What should I wear? What do people wear?
You do not need to wear anything in particular. Studio Friction is a sex- and body-positive space and nudity is common. You should wear street-legal attire as you enter and exit the Studio, but once inside you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
People tend to dress up more for parties and be more casual for other events.
Who attends events at Studio Friction?
All kinds of diverse people attend events at Studio Friction. Some of us have been attending events and doing rope for years, some of us started a few months ago, and some of us are brand new. Studio Friction strives to create an open, friendly, helpful, welcoming and safe(r) environment for everyone 19 years old and older. We even offer monthly events especially for the LGBTQI+ community and younger members of the Studio. We also offer classes that cater to all levels of expertise and experience.
Do I have to be a member to attend an event?
Most of our events require a membership and individual registration (no guest passes). Some weekend open labs offer a non-member guest option.
Becoming a member is easy. We offer a monthly, non-recurring membership if you want to check out the Studio but are not yet ready to commit.
Why should I become a member?
Members are able to attend all regular studio events while non-members are limited to only certain events. Being a member gets you discounts on events, free events, and the ability to vote in our annual elections. You also support our space generally and the larger rope community in Denver.
Who runs the Studio and teaches the classes?
Volunteers are the heart and soul of this organization. In fact, Studio Friction has no paid staff. Everyone you meet working at the Studio, from check-in to party host to cleaners are all donating their time and skills! We also have a board and committees to help run everything. Our instructors are all Studio members that have been vetted by our Programming Committee who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and passionate about giving back to their community. If you would like to get involved, please see our Volunteer page.
When is the next class I want to attend?
As soon as a class is scheduled, it is added to the calendar and available on our Events page. If you don’t see the class you’re interested in on the Events page, it is not currently scheduled. Keep an eye on the Events, as classes and parties are scheduled and added all the time.
How can I get a notification of when an event is scheduled?
We are unable to send out notifications about when classes are posted. Please keep an eye on our Events page for the latest class and event offering.
How do I buy multiple tickets?
Mostly, you don’t. Nearly all of our events require individual registration unless noted otherwise on the event page.
Do you have a newsletter?
Yes, we have a newsletter for our members. All members are included in our newsletter (unless they opt out).
How do I cancel my membership?
To stop membership automatic renewals, login to your Studio Friction account, go to your profile, select Invoices and payments, and then click “Stop recurring payments.” Your membership will end automatically at your next renewal date.
