Arms Free Harnesses

Would your ribs like a break from the Leafless, but you don’t feel like a TK or an arms-front harness? Thankfully, there are options in shibari! In this beginner friendly class we will explore two arms-free chest alternatives, the Butterfly and the Kite harness, that can withstand dynamic suspensions, and be loaded 5 different ways. We’ll go over harness patterns, hanger placements and considerations, and leave time for labbing a full suspension with your partner. Mel and Finch learned these harnesses from Shibari Study with Gorgone and GiGi respectfully, and have used them extensively in their rope practice over the last year.

Things to bring:

  • 3-4 hanks of rope of your choice
  • Cutting tool
  • Suspension kit, if you plan on labbing out the harness in the air, YOU MUST HAVE SUSPENSION EXPERIENCE TO LAB IN THE AIR

Prerequisites:

Top prerequisites:

Familiarity with tying chest harnesses, ability to tie at least one solid hip harness (gunslinger, thigh cage, futo okay) if participating in the suspension labbing portion. Experience communicating in suspension, knowledge of nerve safety. Completion of B2 is necessary, but I1 is preferred. Suspension experience is not an absolute necessity, but if people have not suspended before, this is NOT the class to learn in, and it means they'll miss out on the last hour of class.

Bottom prerequisites:

Experience in body awareness and communication. Suspension experience is required if going in the air for the lab portion of the class.

All participants must have a shared understanding of negotiations, consent, and safety. Clarity on boundaries around touch and aftercare needs.

About the Instructors:

Mel (She/Her)

Mel entered the Denver kink scene in August 2023. She’s a big fan of twisting people into shapes, while collaboratively exploring the individual strengths each person brings to rope. Whether topping or bottoming, her interests include challenging hashira ties, laughter, and power dynamics. She identifies as a queer, polyamorous, disabled, kinky switch.

Finch (She/Her)

Finch is a rope switch who started her rope journey at Studio Friction in 2023 as a bottom, and later became a top in 2024. She is a forever student, and is continuously learning new rope skills. As a bottom, she thrives on sensual, connective rope where she can express her playful side. As a top, she thrives on connective, dynamic rope that allows her bottom to feel strong and seen- you will often see her tying at the studio as a co-top with her husband. Her favorite thing in topping is allowing her chaos gremlin side to come out, which often means she'll be using her bottom as her own personal jungle gym.
