Why is it that bottoms have widely varying appetites and tolerances for pain? And why does a bottom’s pain tolerance change from scene to scene? What can Tops do to better understand a bottom’s experience with pain in order to Top hotter and more sustainable (but high intensity) scenes? In this class, we’re gonna talk about pain–the good consensual kind–and how to make the most of it. We’ll spend some time talking about the science and neurochemistry of BDSM-induced pain to help us create and curate more joyful experiences for ourselves and our play partners using the delightful connection tool of pain. In a world of ‘bomb-proof bottoms’ and heavy masochists, we will talk about some skills bottoms can use today to better manage in-scene pain, distinguish harm/damage from pain, and communicate more effectively to Tops about pain before, during, and after a scene. Tops should leave this class with a toolkit to better manage the pain lifecycle of a scene, create high intensity but sustainable play regardless of your bottom’s pain tolerance on a given day, and better read your bottom’s pain thresholds and preferences. Most of the examples and demos we will use will be rope-centric but the principles apply to impact, and other sorts of BDSM play.

Optional materials if interested in demoing: 2 hanks of rope and an impact implement

About the Instructors:

Mx Bliss (she/they) is a joyful sadomasochist, sensation empath, consent enthusiast, rope switch, self suspender, and lifestyle quinkster (queer kinkster). They identify as Daddy AF, on both sides of the slash. Bliss is having the time of their life discovering all the ways to connect with BDSM and rope and is eager to share the joy. They co-facilitate AlternaRope, a celebration of diversity in rope and co-hosts the Friction pop-up events. She also produces the Jiffy Kink events and runs Studio Bound in Portland, Oregon. Both in vanilla and kink worlds, MxBliss frequently presents on negotiation, consent, and diversity/equity/inclusion. With some trepidation, she is starting to teach rope classes. She loves all the feedback, especially the kind that will help her grow and have her intention better mirror the impact of her behavior/words.

BetwixtBlushes (she/her) is a rope enthusiast who most often finds herself bottoming in the giggly masochistic spectrum.  She has a fondness for thigh high socks, sour gummy worms, and BDSM discussion groups.

She's been participating in the Colorado scene since 2015 and a firm believer that learning never stops.  She is a curriculum instructor for Studio Friction, has taught/performed in many venues locally, and most recently, at Kinkfest 2022.
