  Description:

  This is the final section of our intermediate series. You must have completed the intermediate 2 series or tested out of it in order to take this class. 
  

  In this course we’ll cover some ways to turn all of the technical stuff into fun scenes, start moving our partners around in partials, learn the key information around torsions, and introduce you to transitions. 

  Requirements: 

  - Must have a solid understanding of a couple chest harnesses and hip harness (likely from taking Beginner 1 and 2, and Intermediate 1 and 2)

  - Experience with load lines and suspension

  - All needed hardware and gear. 

  - 8-12 bundles of rope 25’-30’ in length

  TheDude has been tying for... a long time. Thanks to the opportunities provided by Denver Rope Bite and Studio Friction's efforts, he has had some amazing opportunities to learn from presenters around the globe. Pre-Covid he could often be found at parties and events having fun scenes, teaching and occasionally performing. These days he is focusing on play at home but still trying to build community through smaller, more focused, educational opportunities..

  BetwixtBlushes (she/her)

  BetwixtBlushes is a regular in the Denver scene since 2015. She is an enthusiast of discussion groups, bottoms speaking up (especially in class), and thigh high socks. If you hear giggling, she's often the culprit.

  Studio Friction's Rope Bondage Series:

  Beginner 1

  This course is the right place to start.

  It is perfect if you are brand new to rope, interested, & excited to jump in!

  Details:

  • When: Mondays 6:00pm-8:00pm. April 8th, 15th, 22nd, & 29th
  • Studio friction membership is required to attend curriculum courses to enable us to maintain our 501(c)7 non-profit status. If you're not a member but interested in attending you can purchase a one-month membership for $10. Learn more by clicking here.
  • Course price is per tying pair. You must provide your own partner. 
  • You must provide your own rope (2 to 4 lengths of ~30 feet) although rope will be available to purchase from the studio during your first class.

  Description:

  This series is meant to give you the basics to step into using rope bondage at home safely, as well as be able to learn other floor-based topics in outside classes. Please note that both a partner and rope are required. Rope can be purchased at the studio, as needed.

  By the end of the Beginner 1 series, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the benefits and drawbacks to various types of rope
  2. Perform at least three different types of rope safety checks in appropriate situations
  3. Confidently negotiate with new and existing partners
  4. Seek and respect consent for sexual and non-sexual play activities
  5. Tie a Somerville Bowline single column tie that will not collapse
  6. Tie a reverse tension chest harness with appropriate tension
  7. Tie a double-column that won’t collapse
  8. Tie a bunny ears armbinder 
  9. Gain an initial understanding of shoulder mobility 
  10. Tie a spiral futomomo
  11. Understand the purpose and function of frictions
  12. Gain an initial understanding of a 2-rope TK

  Equipment:

  2 to 4 - 30' lengths of rope

  Instructors:

  Thomas (he/him, fet: untiedbythomas)

  Thomas joined Studio Friction and the Denver Kink community in April of 2022 and has been obsessed ever since. A rope top and self suspender, Thomas has a deep love for all things Shibari, whether that be taking every class possible, learning a new harness for suspensions, or compulsively shopping for new rope. He believes no scene is finished until the last bit of rope is removed, putting extra emphasis on connection, body movement, and intimacy. Recently stepping into the world of teaching, he is so excited to give back to the community that has taught him so much and share all of the education he has absorbed along the way.

  Within the kink world, Thomas' interests include: grappling/wrestling, D/S dynamics, CNC play, and is willing to try anything at least 4 times. Outside of kink, Thomas can be found playing guitar, reading, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, playing board games, walking his 2 dogs, and writing code. Thomas identifies as a cis, poly, het, white male and is constantly curious about human experiences different than his own.

  *** NEW*** Studio Friction Curriculum Grants

  To minimize the inequities and financial barriers to rope bondage education, and to increase engagement and participation of a diversity of participants, Studio Friction is able to offer one Tuition Grant per 3-course succession of Beginner 1, Beginner 2 and Intermediate 1. This is a 3 course, 3 month series with the goal to educate students from their very first single column knot to their first suspension.

  A Wrapped membership - providing discounted access to other Studio Friction events - is included for all grantees. This is a limited opportunity of 6 to 10 grants per year based on Studio Friction curriculum program scheduling availability.

  Studio Friction's newest comedy show is hosted by our very own Chris Wellman. Chris is a kink & sex positive comedian who hosts both the Comedy & Kink and The Slut Down comedy shows in Denver.

  The Knotty Show is part stand-up comedy show, part rope demonstration. Colorado's goofiest comedians perform their craft alongside a couple of kinksters doing a suspension. Sometimes the comics roll with it and sometimes the comics get all blushy & bashful. Either way, hilarity ensues!

  This show is 21+, BYOB, and will have donation libations and pizza available. Patrons are still welcome to bring their own sodas, water bottles, beer, and wine to enjoy (no hard liquor).

  Details:

  GoodFoxy (she/they)

  GoodFoxy (she/they) has been in love with shibari for about 4 years. She was thankfully introduced to it as a bottom by a friend and after taking curriculum classes with the intention of bottoming, they soon found a desire to learn to tie quickly becoming clear. They identify as a queer rope switch. Their tying style leans heavily into sensual, focused, connected (umm..sometimes sexy) rope with interwoven elements of sadism, playfulness, and creativity.

  Zoë / Sn0h (she/her)

  Zoë discovered her passion for Shibari a year ago, drawn to its beauty, intimacy, and the profound connection it fosters. Her journey in Shibari has been transformative, teaching her the power of consent, communication, and deep exploration of one's self.

  Beyond the ropes, Zoë cherishes the connections she forges with her partners and the kink community. She seeks to share her knowledge and passion through workshops and demonstrations, fostering an environment of exploration.

  When: Sunday, April 21st 12PM-4PM

  Description:

  Are you feeling confident in your single point or bamboo suspensions and curious about tying on the hashira? Have you tied/been tied on the hashira vertically, but struggled with where to go from there? If so, this class is for you!

  In this class, you will learn a transition sequence on the hashira going from a vertical suspension, to a side suspension, and ending in an inversion. The class will start with a discussion on the additional challenges and considerations of tying on the hashira (for both top and bottom!), followed by a demonstration of the transition sequence. Along the way, you will learn skills, tips, and trick for how to make hashira transitions more smoothly. The second half of class will be your opportunity to try the sequence! You will receive ample time to negotiate and decide what harnesses and options with in the sequence work best for you and your partner.

  This class is intended for those that already suspension experience. Tops should feel confident in their harnesses and upline management and bottoms should feel confident in their body awareness and ability to communicate needs and sensations during the tie. For the sequence, you will need to tie a suspendable chest harness, gunslinger, and futo and/or thigh cage. You will need to bring a full suspension kit, including rope of your choice for harnesses, synthetic rope for uplines, carabiners and additional hardpoint hardware, and safety scissors or other cutting implement.

  Required Pre-requisites & Equipment:

  • For Tops: Experience and confidence with multiple suspendable harnesses and with static and dynamic transitions.  Ability to manage unexpected challenges as they arise in a safe manner.

    For bottoms: Experience with transition in suspension and/or ground, deep understanding of your own rope preferences and placement, responses, bodily needs, and limits

    For both: skilled negotiation, communicate, and create physical and emotional safety for partner(s).

  Marilyn (she/her, fet: _Marilyn_)

  Marilyn first entered the Denver rope community in 2019. After finishing the partnered curriculum in March 2020 (literally the Wednesday before Denver shut down!), Marilyn began self-tying as a way to maintain her rope skills. She quickly fell in love with the playful, energetic, and dynamic nature of it! She is happy to be back in Denver and to be exploring all that rope has to offer again, whether that's tying others, tying herself, or letting others tie her sometimes too.

  Marilyn identifies as a queer, polyamorous, kinky switch. She's passionate about relationship anarchy, arguing the semantics of language, and the value of building connections. She's excited to be engaging with the Denver rope community in a new, bigger way through teaching and curriculum development.

  Kathryn/shorty_kat (she/her)

  Kathryn has been a member of the Denver rope community since 2021. Initially captivated by Shibari’s blend of beauty and pain, she has fallen in love with the technical depth and artistry rope offers. She began her journey as a bottom, with a fondness for Futomomo inversions. In 2022, Kathryn decided to delve deeper into Shibari by learning to tie. Since then, she has dedicated herself to honing her skills as a rigger through meticulous attention to detail. Kathryn has a love for flowy, sensual, sweet ties with a dash of meanness sprinkled on top for spice.

  Oso (he/him)

  Oso has been a part of the denver rope community since early 2022. Originally intrigued by the shapes he saw, Oso fell in love with the intimacy, challenge, risk, and connection associated with Shibari. Oso identifies as a switch but still has a strong passion for bottoming. He loves challenging ties with single point hangs, pain, and twisty torsions. Through rope and self expression, Oso believes that everyone has the opportunity to create something beautiful and cultivate community growth.

  The Next Generation (TNG) Night is back at Studio Friction! A special event for the younger folx under 35. TNG is great for those new and experienced with rope alike. It’s a safe space to try out rope for the first time while also building community among the next generation. Skill sharing is encouraged from experienced riggers. And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

  Schedule:

  • From 7:30-8pm there will be casual instruction on a basic knot and safety.
  • Pending the availability of experienced riggers, there may be an opportunity for rope tastings throughout the night.
  • Arrive by 8pm to allow our volunteers time to socialize/play too!

  TNG is especially good for people new to Studio Friction as it’s one of our few regular monthly events that is open to non-members.

  Here is your opportunity to give back with a little sweat!

  
  

  Join us for a community work day at Studio Friction! This is an excellent opportunity for all members of the community to come together and help improve our beloved studio. The day will be filled with a range of different projects that will require various levels of skill and expertise.

  Firstly, we will be adding more hangers to wall points and fixing some anchors. Secondly, we will be cleaning up our parking lot. This will require individuals who are willing to get their hands dirty and don't mind a little weeding.

  Thirdly, we will be hanging a TV on the wall in our lobby. This will require individuals who are handy with powers tools. Fourthly, we will be doing a deep clean of the studio along with some organizing.

  We will provide all the necessary tools and equipment for each project, and we will have team leaders on site to guide each group. Lunch will be provided.

  This event is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community and help improve our beloved community studio. Plus, you'll get to meet new people and have fun while doing it! Join us for a rewarding community work day at Studio Friction.

  Studio Friction's newest comedy show is hosted by our very own Chris Wellman. Chris is a kink & sex positive comedian who also hosts The Knotty Show, The Slut Down, and Comedy & Kink comedy shows in Colorado.

  BARE is a body positive, full nude stand-up comedy show that has been running since 2019. Each show features some of Colorado's best comedians stripping nude all while telling jokes and baring it all on stage.

  The audience is welcome to bare it all and is permitted to be as naked as they wish once they have been checked-in inside the venue. Clothing must be "Bar Legal" and worn until you go through ticketing.

  Every Saturday from 5-8 pm, Studio Friction opens the doors for members to practice their rope work, Make sure to bring some rope and a tying partner if you want to tie or be tied by another person. Self-suspenders and observers are welcome to come solo.

  AND every first Saturday we teach a 1 hour 101 lesson, so if you have never done anything at all with rope, here is an easy starting point. Please arrive by 5:15 to participate in the lesson. We will be teaching a single column tie and one other beginner skill. Some loaner rope is available, and there is rope available for purchase as well. Curious what to wear if it’s your first time?   Tight Lines: A kink life drawing event

  COST: Sliding scale $10/$15/$20

  Please bring your favorite drawing materials; we will be drawing the human form in an array of kinky activities. Obviously, there will be a strong focus on rope, and we will likely start there, but eventually, there will be a range of kinks represented. We will create a relaxed atmosphere to see and draw fun, sexy things. 

  If you are new to rope or kink, this will be a great low-pressure atmosphere to spend some time watching and drawing some beautiful kink. Models will pose for varying times in various kinds of positions. 

  If you don't have them, we will provide some basic materials, but certainly, bring your favorite sketchbook/tablet/easel and mark-making supplies. 

  Switchtext isn’t an art instructor, but he does have an art degree and has spent a lot of time in life drawing classes. He is happy to offer input and suggestions on your work if you would like.

  Takate Kote or TKs are challenging for most of us, and not a tie for everyone, but if you are interested in adjustments that might make a TK more manageable for you or your partner, Hajime Kinoko will share three variations that may help.

  Lindsay Hayes (she/her) Lindsay holds an MA in communication and an MA in Couple and Family Therapy. Her master’s thesis was a qualitative study on the lived experience of being in a polycule. She is currently a student in the PhD in Counseling Studies program at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where she continues to study polyamory. Lindsay practices therapy part-time in her practice More to Love, PLLC and lives in Denver. In addition to being a rope bunny, she enjoys spending time with her pet bunnies, husband, partner, and friends in her spare time.

  OPEN ROPE LAB WEDNESDAY Nights

  Every Wednesday from 7-10 pm, Studio Friction opens the doors for members to practice their rope work. Tie yourself, tie a partner, be tied by someone -- or even just stop by to socialize and observe! Note that no class will be offered but knowledgeable folx will be around to answer questions!

  Important event information:

  • Studio friction membership is required to attend Wednesday lab to enable us to maintain our 501(c)7 non-profit status (per the IRS we can only earn 30% of our income from non-members). If you're not a member but interested in attending, consider joining us. Membership starts at $10 per month non-recurring.
  • Registration & payment required online in advance.
  • Bring a photo ID that matches the Last Name listed in your online registration for admittance.

  TNG At Studio Friction

  The Next Generation (TNG) Night is back at Studio Friction! A special event for the younger folx under 35. TNG is great for those new and experienced with rope alike. It’s a safe space to try out rope for the first time while also building community among the next generation. Skill sharing is encouraged from experienced riggers. And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

  Schedule:

  • From 7:30-8pm there will be casual instruction on a basic knot and safety.
  • Pending the availability of experienced riggers, there may be an opportunity for rope tastings throughout the night.
  • Arrive by 8pm to allow our volunteers time to socialize/play too!

  TNG is especially good for people new to Studio Friction as it’s one of our few regular monthly events that is open to non-members.

  Important Event Information

  • This event is restricted to kinksters 35 years of age or younger. Older attendees in good standing are allowed to attend as an accompanied guest with their TNG-aged partner. Folx over 35 years of age will be required to arrive and leave with their TNG partner.

Self-suspenders and observers are welcome to come solo. Note that no class will be offered but knowledgeable folx will be around to answer questions!

  Studio Friction Rope Intensive:

  INTRO TO BAMBOO SUSPENSION

  w/ Shosty9/Matt and athena/ghost_sonata

  Class Description:

  In this class, Matt & athena will walk through the basics of tying to overhead bamboo as a hard point, instead of a traditional single point. They will start from rigging the bamboo and proceed all the way to suspension exercises.

  Bamboo is different and nuanced, especially when so many of us are used to tying on single points. These differences will be discussed, as well as safety considerations.

  Following this discussion, Matt & athena will lead class participants in setting up their bamboo and instructing a tie off that is designed more specifically for bamboo suspension. Following this, two suspensions will be demonstrated that highlight some of the differences between tying to bamboo vs. a single point.

  The first will be a partial suspension that will allow for use of the newly instructed tie off, as well as give the rigger an opportunity to discover some of the differences of tying on bamboo. It will also give the person being tied an opportunity to experience the different sensations of a bamboo suspension.

  The second suspension will be a full suspension that will give the rigger the chance to play with different body positions on the bamboo, and more practice with tie offs. The person being tied will be able to experience the different ways a bamboo suspension affects their body, and will give them the opportunity to experiment with micro adjustments with their body to better manage these types of suspension.

  Throughout this class, athena will offer valuable information for persons being tied in respect to bamboo suspensions, including how to manage breathing, the different body sensations of a bamboo suspension, and other bottoming-related topics as they arise.

  Bamboo hard points will be provided. Riggers *must* provide their own safety shears/knife/cutting implement.

  Prerequisites and Equipment:

  Rigger: knowledge of a suspension worthy chest harness, understanding of tension in ties, familiarity with suspension line tie offs, and non-collapsible single column ties. Prior static suspension experience is strongly preferred.

  Bottom: clear and thorough communication skills, strong body awareness in rope (particularly in suspension), ability to adjust in rope while suspended, and ability to manage potentially stressful positions while suspended. Previous static suspension experience preferred.

  Equipment:

  Every tying pair will need about 10-12 lengths of rope in good condition (however many you need for suspension, plus a couple more), carabiners, and a cutting implement. An aftercare blanket and/or pillow, as well as snacks, are optional but nice to have.

  About the Instructors:

  Matt/Shosty9 (he/him) & athena/ghost_sonata (she/her)

  Matt has been a part of the Denver rope community since 2018. A true engineer at heart, he is focused more on the "why" of rope, breaking down patterns to understand their interaction. Athena's kink journey began 8 years ago, and she's spent her time exploring power exchange, consent education, giggly masochism, and plenty of time in rope.

  Matt and athena are partners in both rope and life as a whole. When their first paths crossed in 2019, they initially discussed tying together in a totally casual context, primarily for Matt's "learning." That context lasted precisely two weeks before they started mapping out their future together. The two thoroughly enjoy teaching as a pair, with athena's extensive bottoming knowledge rounding out Matt's technical tying abilities. Aside from rope, they enjoy primal play, knives, impact, breath play, and fooling the muggles into thinking they're all about vanilla heteronormativity.
