Every 4th Thursday of the month from 7–10 pm, our Soft Lab is open to members to practice and play in a low-sensory environment. This evening is designed to be a quieter, more intimate experience, with dim lighting, soft music, and reduced overall stimulation.

We ask that play be within the intention of the evening; including no loud scenes, such as electric play or whips, and that scenes evoking screaming be considered a better fit for other nights/events. Additionally, please be mindful of your volume in conversations with partners and peers.

As with our Wednesday Open Labs, no formal instruction will be offered, but knowledgeable folx will be present and available to answer questions.

The Next Generation (TNG) Night is back at Studio Friction! A special event for the younger folx between 19 and 35. TNG is great for those new and experienced with rope alike. It’s a safe space to try out rope for the first time while also building community among the next generation. Skill sharing is encouraged from experienced riggers. And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

Schedule:

Doors open @ 7p
From 7:30-8pm there will be casual instruction on a basic knot and safety.
Pending the availability of experienced riggers, there may be an opportunity for rope tastings throughout the night.
Arrive by 8pm to allow our volunteers time to socialize/play too!

TNG is especially good for people new to Studio Friction as it’s one of our few regular monthly events that is open to non-members.

Rope Practicum is a friendly and collaborative space where rope enthusiasts come together to share, learn, and grow in their practice. Whether you’re a top, bottom, switch, or self-tier, this community-driven event offers a chance to ask questions, troubleshoot techniques, exchange skills, and dive into meaningful discussions about rope bondage. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone—newbies and seasoned practitioners alike—can expand their knowledge and refine their craft through open-source, community-led learning.

Please note, Rope Practicum is not a play space. While playfulness is welcome, this is a space focused on learning and discussion, not on scenes or play. To keep the atmosphere conducive to education, studio lights will remain on, and music will be off.

This isn’t a traditional class, nor do we operate within a teacher-student hierarchy. We encourage everyone to contribute, whether you’re offering your expertise or exploring new ideas. Our inclusive approach means that all are welcome, regardless of experience level or role within rope dynamics.

Examples of What We Can Explore Together:

Asking and answering questions—whether community-wide or personal interests
Reviewing and practicing techniques from recent studio classes or intensives
Troubleshooting knots, variations (like munter hitches, 3rd rope variations), and rope management
Deepening conversations around topics like active bottoming, risk assessment, nerve pathways, consent, negotiation, and more
Workshopping specific ties, positions, or sequences
Exploring “soft skills” like connective rope, ichinawa, or intricate finger/toe ties
Discussing the history and adaptation of Japanese rope bondage practices
Offering and receiving feedback on your ties for improvement

Come with curiosity, and leave with new insights, connections, and skills. Rope Practicum is all about fostering a supportive, interactive community where everyone’s journey is valued!

This course is the right place to start.

It is perfect if you are brand new to rope, interested, & excited to jump in!

Details:

When: Mondays 6:00pm-8:00pm.

You must provide your own rope (2 to 4 lengths of ~30 feet) although rope will be available to purchase from the studio during your first class.

Description:

This series is meant to give you the basics to step into using rope bondage at home safely, as well as be able to learn other floor-based topics in outside classes. Please note that both a partner and rope are required. Rope can be purchased at the studio, as needed.

By the end of the Beginner 1 series, students will be able to:

Identify the benefits and drawbacks to various types of rope
Perform at least three different types of rope safety checks in appropriate situations
Confidently negotiate with new and existing partners
Seek and respect consent for sexual and non-sexual play activities
Tie a Somerville Bowline single column tie that will not collapse
Tie a reverse tension chest harness with appropriate tension
Tie a double-column that won’t collapse
Tie a bunny ears armbinder
Gain an initial understanding of shoulder mobility
Tie a spiral futomomo
Understand the purpose and function of frictions
Tie an arms front chest harness
Gain an initial understanding of a 2-rope TK

Instructors:

Thomas (he/him, fet: untiedbythomas)

Thomas joined Studio Friction and the Denver Kink community in April of 2022 and has been obsessed ever since. A rope top and self suspender, Thomas has a deep love for all things Shibari, whether that be taking every class possible, learning a new harness for suspensions, or compulsively shopping for new rope. He believes no scene is finished until the last bit of rope is removed, putting extra emphasis on connection, body movement, and intimacy. Having learned from some of the most incredible rope instructors in the world, he is so excited to give back to the community that has taught him so much and share all of the education he has absorbed along the way.

Within the kink world, Thomas' interests include: grappling/wrestling, D/S dynamics, CNC play, and is willing to try anything at least 4 times. Outside of kink, Thomas can be found snowboarding, playing guitar, reading, playing board games, walking his 3 dogs, and writing code. Thomas identifies as a cis, poly, het, white male and is constantly curious about human experiences different than his own.

Marilyn (she/her, fet: _Marilyn_)

Marilyn first entered the Denver rope community in 2019. After finishing the partnered curriculum in March 2020 (literally the Wednesday before Denver shut down!), Marilyn began self-tying as a way to maintain her rope skills. She quickly fell in love with the playful, energetic, and dynamic nature of it! She is happy to be back in Denver and to be exploring all that rope has to offer again, whether that's tying others, tying herself, or letting others tie her sometimes too.

Marilyn identifies as a queer, polyamorous, kinky switch. She's passionate about relationship anarchy, arguing the semantics of language, and the value of building connections. She's excited to be engaging with the Denver rope community in a new, bigger way through teaching and curriculum development.

When: Thursdays 7:00-9:00

Description:

This course builds on the first 2 beginner courses and is the first in the intermediate level. During these four weeks, we will refine the structure and tension of our chest harnesses for suspension, gain an understanding of load line mechanics and safety, tie a mermaid harness that can be suspended, learn about directional suspensions including side, face-up, and face down, and ultimately tie a static suspension.

Requirements:

If you have not completed Beginner 1 & 2 you will need to test into Intermediate 1. Please send an email to office@studiofriction.com or reach out to one of the inductors. You must schedule test more than 2 weeks before class start date.

Working knowledge of a suspendable chest harness and hip harness, basic negotiation skills, 6-8x 8M/30' lengths of rope, 2-3x 8M/30' lengths of POSH or Nylon for Load Lines, 3-5x load rated carabiners, load rated rigging plate.

About our instructors:

Kathryn/IG: kathryn.ties (she/her)

Kathryn has been a member of the Denver rope community since 2021. Initially captivated by Shibari’s blend of beauty and pain, she has fallen in love with the technical depth and artistry rope offers. She began her journey as a bottom, with a fondness for Futomomo inversions. In 2022, Kathryn decided to delve deeper into Shibari by learning to tie. Since then, she has dedicated herself to honing her skills as a rigger through meticulous attention to detail. Kathryn has a love for flowy, sensual, sweet ties with a dash of meanness sprinkled on top for spice.

Mel/FL: mel_at_dawn (she/her)

Mel entered the Denver kink scene in August 2023. She’s a big fan of twisting people into shapes, while collaboratively exploring the individual strengths each person brings to rope. Whether topping or bottoming, her interests include challenging hashira ties, laughter, and power dynamics.

She identifies as a queer, polyamorous, disabled, kinky switch. Humans contain multitudes and Mel believes rope can be a space to honor and encourage that.

Adorn yourself in your finest grotesque. Whether you’re tying, being tied, playing, performing, spectating, or simply soaking up the spooky atmosphere, there’s room for you here.

Think burlap sack hoods, wicked rope, ghoulish giggles, and ghostly guffaws—and whatever other delightful horrors your imagination can conjure.

Bring your favorite toys and your favorite people, and play the way you want within our Code of Conduct. Rope, electricity, wax, impact, bondage, knives, whips, and other creative forms of consensual mischief are all welcome.

Not feeling particularly playful? That’s okay, too. Come lounge on the couches, cuddle up, chat with friends, watch the scenes unfold, and enjoy the Halloween atmosphere.

We’ll have light snacks and beverages available throughout the evening to keep your tricks and treats fueled.

These days he is focusing on play at home but still trying to build community through smaller, more focused, educational opportunities..

BetwixtBlushes (she/her)

BetwixtBlushes is a regular in the Denver scene since 2015. She is an enthusiast of discussion groups, bottoms speaking up (especially in class), and thigh high socks. If you hear giggling, she's often the culprit.

Join us for a live figure drawing experience celebrating the art of rope and Shibari. Bring your favorite drawing materials and settle into a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere as artists capture the beauty of rope through a series of thoughtfully composed live poses.

Throughout the session, models and riggers will create a range of compositions—from elegant floor work to striking suspensions—highlighting expressive human forms, dynamic lines, and intricate rope patterns. Poses will vary in length, offering opportunities for both quick gesture sketches and more detailed studies.

Our models and riggers generously volunteer their time, bodies and experience to make this event possible. They would love to see your sketches and finished artwork after the poses are complete, so if you're comfortable sharing, please take a moment to show them what you've created after their sessions!

This is a BYOB event; please drink responsibly. Glass is not allowed in the studio.

Studio Friction's newest comedy show is hosted by our very own Chris Wellman. Chris is a kink & sex positive comedian who also hosts The Knotty Show, The Slut Down, and Comedy & Kink comedy shows in Colorado.

BARE is a body positive, full nude stand-up comedy show that has been running since 2019. Each show features some of Colorado's best comedians stripping nude all while telling jokes and baring it all on stage.

The audience is welcome to bare it all and is permitted to be as naked as they wish once they have been checked-in inside the venue. Clothing must be "Bar Legal" and worn until you go through ticketing.

**Please bring a towel or robe to sit on if you plan on being nude**

**Professional photography will be taking place at the event per Event Host**

Class Description:

You have probably seen people utilizing bamboo as a hard point... but the lock offs look different... and it takes up two points instead of one? How do you attach the bamboo to your points? And how do you, in turn, utilize this different plane versus what you have done on single point? In this class we will learn the basics of uplines, and how to stretch or compress our partner to utilize the wonderful properties of bamboo!

We will start with a practical discussion, tie along together to set up our bamboo, then demonstrate a partial suspension as well as a full suspension, then guide students through these poses together. We will learn how to take advantage of our point to either stretch the body and lines or create compression. This class aims to highlight the difference to single point suspension; giving tops an opportunity to get comfortable with the new lock off, experiment with simple transitions, and explore body mechanics on bamboo. And for our partners to explore the different sensations that suspension on bamboo creates.

Prerequisites and Equipment:

Tops: Knowledge and experience with static suspensions, a suspendable upper body and lower body harness, knowledge of a variety of single column ties (completion of I-1 studio curriculum preferred), experience communicating in suspension. THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST TIME SUSPENDING!

Bottoms: Experience in static suspensions preferred, body awareness in suspension and knowledge of nerve safety, and experience communicating in suspension. THIS IS NOT YOUR FIRST TIME BEING SUSPENDED!

Equipment:

Every tying pair will need a full suspension rope kit (7-12 full length ropes, including uplines), at least two rated carabiners/metal for rigging (limited amount to borrow), and cutting tool. An aftercare blanket and/or pillow, as well as snacks, are optional but nice to have.

Every Saturday from 5-8 pm, Studio Friction opens the doors for members to practice their rope work, Make sure to bring some rope and a tying partner if you want to tie or be tied by another person. Self-suspenders and observers are welcome to come solo.

AND every first Saturday we teach a 1 hour 101 lesson, so if you have never done anything at all with rope, here is an easy starting point. Please arrive by 5:15 to participate in the lesson. We will be teaching a single column tie and one other beginner skill. Some loaner rope is available, and there is rope available for purchase as well. Curious what to wear if it’s your first time? Wear what feels comfortable, anything goes.

She specializes in working with active-duty service members, veterans, and first responders, with particular expertise in combat trauma, sexual violence, complex trauma, and vicarious trauma. Amanda is also deeply committed to serving the queer community and works affirmatively with clients across diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship structures. As a Certified Sex Therapist, she is highly trained in addressing concerns related to sexuality, intimacy, relationships, consensual non-monogamy, and kink through an intersectional, inclusive, and sex-positive clinical lens. Amanda’s work emphasizes safety, empowerment, and resilience, supporting clients in healing from trauma while cultivating authentic connection, embodiment, and overall well-being. In addition to direct clinical work, Amanda provides supervision and consultation to therapists seeking advanced competency in trauma and sex therapy. Her work emphasizes empowerment, resilience, and the reclamation of identity, helping clients move from survival toward meaningful connection, embodiment, and psychological well-being. Description:

This series is meant to give you the basics to step into using rope bondage at home safely, as well as be able to learn other floor-based topics.

By the end of the Beginner 2 series, students will be able to:

Explain the benefits and drawbacks to each type of single column
Build a TK that maintains proper tension and structure
Learn appropriate suspension hardware
Tie an effective and sustainable hip harness
Tie an effective and sustainable arms-free chest harness
Understand ways to incorporate arms into an arms-free harness
Gain an initial understanding of a 3-rope TK

Equipment: 4 to 6 - 30' lengths of rope

By the end of the Beginner 1 series, students will be able to:

Tie a Somerville Bowline single column tie that will not collapse

Tie a bunny ears armbinder
Gain an initial understanding of shoulder mobility
Tie a spiral futomomo
Understand the purpose and function of frictions

Nova (they/them) Nova has been tying in Denver since 2023. They switch in rope and all things kinky, and are passionate about education. They believe rope is for every body, and are dedicated to adapting rope to fit the needs of the scene and the people in it. Nova loves the tactile, connective element of tying and is thrilled to have a creative practice that facilitates platonic cuddling. They have a particular love for creatively themed ties and mixing rope with other sadistic play.

Nova identifies as a transmasc, polyamorous, kinky switch. Outside of rope they can be found climbing, birdwatching obsessively, and baking for praise.

T / twistyt (he/him)

T joined Studio Friction in late 2023. His favorite thing about rope is how it fosters connection and communication, and its calming effects on distractable neurodivergent minds. T comes from an educator background, and is passionate about generating safe, positive, and inclusive educational experiences for newcomers to the rope scene.

T identifies as queer and gender-nonconforming, and is a rope top. He especially loves to combine the art of rope with his cosplay and photography hobbies. Outside of kink, T is a dog dad and amateur taxidermist.

We talk a lot about how to ask for consent and how to hear “yes.” But what happens when the answer is no?

This conversation is about the stuff that can come up when someone doesn’t want what we want: disappointment, rejection, embarrassment, hurt feelings, attraction that isn’t reciprocated, or the urge to take it personally. How do we make space for those feelings without making the person who said no responsible for managing them? How do we respect a boundary without punishing someone for having one? And how do we make it easier for people to be honest with us, even when the answer might be hard to hear?

This is a roundtable conversation, not a lecture. Come ready to share your experiences and perspectives, listen to other people’s, and hopefully leave with something useful to take with you.

About the Facilitator:

Tattooed_n_Nerdy (she/her) is a total sex nerd, both personally and professionally. As an educator and sex therapist, she provides knowledge about kink, sexuality, consensual nonmonogamy, intimacy, desire, and navigating trauma recovery. From the classroom to the therapy room to the conference room to the play space, she is an intersectional and sex-positive provocateur hoping to instigate thoughtful dialogue and dispel shame related to all things kinky and sexy. Join her to learn more about how to be thoughtful, engaged, and aware of your wellbeing and you find your path to pleasure.
